You might wonder, how can I go back in time and be eight years old again? Well, get invited to give a TEDx talk, write out your script word for word, and then try to learn it by heart. I promise you instant regression back to elementary school, the stress of homework, the anxiety of exams and performing in front of the entire classroom.

I began by writing the entire talk, using Sir Ken Robinson’s recommended three-part formula: What? So What? and Now What?—Really helpful for organizing ideas. Honing my talk to its essence in the most palatable way took endless sessions of reading and rereading, writing and rewriting, refining and clarifying. If I didn’t have the quickly approaching deadline, I might never have put so much sustained effort into it. I’ve even discovered new subtleties about my topic of which I’m very excited. As a result of this elaborate process, I feel a gratifying sense of achievement and immense satisfaction with the final script.

Now, it’s time to learn the script by heart in less then the month left till it’s ShowTime. How will that ever happen? Is it even possible? I feel those butterflies in my stomach, just as I did in front of the class when I was eight years old. Well, with ongoing guidance from those who have gone before me, I’m taking the leap and choosing to trust the process. And what an amazing process it is! What a wonderful training in the art of public speaking! While I’m still nervous as hell, I am also filled with gratitude at the opportunity to stretch and grow professionally, and eventually, increase my impact in the world.
