“We’d never met before, Anna and I. We’d had two somewhat brief phone calls to introduce ourselves, talk about requirements of the TEDxWilmingtonSalon and toss around a few possibilities for our presentation. We both trusted Jim Firman, President of the National Council on Aging and the person who suggested we work together. Still, the thought of presenting a TEDx talk with a perfect stranger, was, I admit, more than a little daunting.
I had nothing to fear.
Moments after meeting each other outside the Wilmington train station, we exchanged hugs and began a lively conversation sprinkled with laughter and delight in discovering what and who we have in common. Our working session in a corner of the Riverfront Market demonstrated that despite different creative styles – Anna thinks well “out loud” whereas I prefer putting my ideas on paper first – we share a passion for challenging ageism, sexism and racism. We’re both deeply concerned about the economic hardships faced by many older people, especially women, who struggle to make ends meet. We recognize that our TEDx talk provides a powerful opportunity to persuade others to take seriously the need to prepare for the third stage of life so it can be enjoyed, not dreaded.
By the end of our 90 minutes together we had a rough draft of our presentation that each of us has edited and polished since. We’re ready for our first practice session when we next get together. The hard task of memorizing lies ahead. But the process of preparing and presenting is easier because Anna and I are no longer strangers. We’re partners, and well on the way to becoming friends.”
