The hardest part about doing a TEDx talk is the memorization. I find it daunting that I have to completely memorize a 14-minute speech! I’m confident in the script I’ve developed (with some great help along the way from my family and TEDxWilmingtonSalon: Fireside producer Geoffrey Berwind). I have experience performing or being up in front of people, so that’s not a problem, either. But it’s been a long time since I memorized something this long and couldn’t use notes to help me along the way.

One of the other TEDxWilmington speakers, Eric Okdeh, asked friends on Facebook for memorization tips, and I read them over carefully. One idea was to keep writing and re-writing it, condensing down the sentences to phrases and finally just to words. Someone suggested reading it out loud every time to practice. Another mentioned recording yourself and watching it over and over.

Once I got to a final script, I started reading it, and breaking the sections into pages. I’m realizing I’m such a visual learner, that as I was speaking it out loud I would picture the word breaks on the page. So I added some color highlights to a few sections to be able to differentiate some of the lines to help break it up in mind.

Finally, I recorded myself doing the talk on the Voice Memo app of my iPhone. Whenever I have downtime, I play the recording and talk along with it, or just listen. It definitely helps! The key, obviously, is lots of practice. If only I didn’t have so many work and life “distractions” and could just practice my talk over and over…Well, off to go practice some more!
