Meet the Speakers: Gudrun Penselin for TEDxWilmingtonWomen

Excitement, nervous energy and overflowing with joy were some of the emotions that filled me when I opened the email from TEDxWilmington that read: “the TEDxWilmington tribe is delighted to inform you that you have been officially selected from a large pool of applicants to give a TEDx talk at our 3rdAnnual Women Conference on Friday, November 30, 2018!

Who could I call to share this exciting news with? In German we have a proverb that says, shared sorrow is half the sorrow and shared joy is double the joy. How true this is. I went through my “inventory” of family and friends who could relate and would be able to share the excitement with me at this moment.

For the remainder of the day it was hard to focus on my work with clients; my mind kept circling around this incredible and at the same time challenging opportunity. What a gift to be able to share my passion with a wide audience!

After the first flood of emotions had subsided, it did not take long to realize that the timing of this event was going to create major challenges for me. It felt like it could not have come at a worse time!  The month was already overflowing with projects and deadlines, and adding another major commitment seemed like an insurmountable task. This feeling grew after reviewing the list of commitments and deadlines that are part of the preparation for giving a TEDx talk. However, there is no way I would pass up an opportunity like this one and therefore, I am now in the midst of the preparations for this big event, making a dream come true. Stay tuned for more.

the TEDx process: Gudrun Penselin for TEDxWilmingtonWomen

In only weeks from today I will be sitting on the plane, making the long journey from northern Alberta, Canada to Wilmington, Delaware to present at the TEDx Wilmington 3rd Annual Women’s Conference. When I think about it, it seems unreal that the time has come so fast. Mostly, I am totally relaxed about it but there are moments when I feel butterflies in my stomach in anticipation of how it will feel to stand on the red carpet in front of an audience, sharing with them my idea of Flowers that Heal Us.

Now, as we are heading into the final stages of preparations, I am happy that I have squeezed through the bottle neck of many of my other major projects and commitments. This means, I can finally devote more time to putting the finishing touches on the presentation and of course, the big task of memorizing and rehearsing the script.

My hope is that my idea worth spreading will touch many people’s lives, provide support for the ailing Earth and truly make a difference for years to come.

WOW – the entire event has been a most amazing experience. I can honestly say that the two days have been one of my highlights of my life! I am eternally grateful for having been given the opportunity to share my passion with so many people. Needless to say, it made me happy to know that I “nailed” my talk. Everything flowed and came easily including the instance that I did not rehearse at all – I cannot remember what I said, the only thing I recall is that the audience was laughing.

However, the actual talk is not what stands out for me the most. The experience as a whole is what makes it so special and memorable: the positive environment, the kind and supportive nature of all the volunteers of the TEDxWilmington tribe, the coaches, all the speakers and the audience.

Thank you to Ajit and the entire organizing team, their unbelievable dedication to TEDx and providing opportunities for people who have ideas worth spreading to make the world a better place to be. Thank you to all the coaches and speakers. The kindness and openness by everyone, the encouraging and supportive atmosphere that filled the entire event were remarkable – what a blessing and honor to have had the opportunity to be part of it. It has been a true gift to be amidst so much hope and positive energy – a treasure to keep forever.

Congratulations to everyone and thank you……
Green blessings, Gudrun
