“I am thrilled that my talk Why Luxury hotels and the publishers who write about them; ought to rethink their relationship was accepted by the TEDx Hospitality Salon to be held in Wilmington Delaware June 7th.
Today, Alit, the producer of the conference gently reminded me that I am already behind by 3 days. I owed my talks outline on Friday but just delivered it now. I guess that’s what happens when you apply for a talk that’s supposed to take 6 months to develop; with 4.5 weeks till ShowTime!
Thankfully, while I am behind in preparing for this particular edition of the talk; I have invested the last 2 years and 2 months to fleshing out and understanding where the breakdown is between the publishers and hotels. I’ve also invested almost $3.5mm of my money, and money from my investors (Greycroft, Softbank ny, correlation ventures, ERA nyc and a few family offices) studying this phenomena first hand by launching surfacehotels.com in October 2015.
I am 6 months through a one year study looking at data from 15 hotels sharing their full booking files, 5 publishers sharing what hotels every reader has read about and then correlating the impact of this content on the hotels revenue from these readers who read about the hotel. If you were to pay McKinsey $2mm; I doubt you could generate such a fulsome study. The results thus far are compelling and clear. Content consumed leads to significant downstream bookings. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise since PR firms are widely used to open hotels and also keep them top of mind.
It’s exciting to step back and realize that in a short period of time, I have very meaningful and exciting insights on where hotels and publishers can take their relationship to turn travel media into an investible scalable and measurable channel.”
