“It is hard to believe we are only about one week away from TEDxWilmington. I said in my first blog post that an interesting talk begins with a compelling idea or story. What I have now come to appreciate more is that although starting with a good story or idea is important, there is a lot of work and focus to convey that idea in a succinct, authentic, and personal manner – and be interesting and relevant to an audience.
I began with an idea that led to a written speech, then shaped the speech into a talk, and refined the talk into a story. I also wanted to share personal experiences and connect tangibly with people’s daily lives. The delivery of my talk also evolved from a speech to a script, relying at first on a teleprompter, then graduating to an outline on notecards. Finally, after enough practice, I have an oral story worth sharing and spreading, without notes.
Months ago, when I accepted the invitation to appear at TEDxWilmington, my primary focus was on what words to say, and how to say them. Now my focus is on what experiences and knowledge I can share, how can we learn together, and how may we all benefit. I’ve been learning throughout the preparation process and look forward to learning even more with you and the other speakers in Wilmington. Safe travels everyone.”
