I submitted the first required video of my TEDxWilmington talk on time and it was not too bad.  The length of the speech was almost perfect with 15 seconds of spare time still available. There was only one issue.  I left out one complete page of my five page speech! And what was worse, at least from my standpoint, was no one who watched the video thought anything was missing.

This actually ended up being an eye opening experience.  As the video and script were scrutinized by others over the next week, I started requesting something new in their feedback.  Were they getting the main points without all the backup detail I originally thought was so necessary?  Did they gain enough of an understanding to be interested in learning more?

The original goal of my talk was to teach and inform others about a system my wife and I have used to direct our financial activities over the last 25 years.  The feedback from others directed me to change my goal to one of creating interest in the system and the power of what it could do for them rather than how it worked.  The need for details dropped dramatically if this was the path I chose to follow.

With assistance from my speech coach, Geoffrey Berwind, we reorganized the thoughts and parts of the speech into a more coherent flow.  I was able to bring back into focus the big impact issues that I had previously cut to meet the time frame.  With three weeks to go before the event, I believe I have a solid structure on which to build a presentation worthy of a TEDx talk.  I guess we’ll all know pretty soon.  In the meantime, I’m off to practice (again!).
