One of the great benefits of working on my presentation for TEDxWilmingtonSalon: Fireside is that I’m being forced to stretch and learn in many ways that surprise me.
I am accustomed to speaking in front of people who are already very interested in how to market themselves and their message. But I’m enjoying the challenge of being in front of people who, like many, might never even want to hear a talk about how to sell or market something.
In trying to open the minds of others, I’m finding I need to open my own mind. For example, when the time came to finalize the title for my talk, I had eleven different possibilities. I just wanted to pick the one I liked and move on. I knew that the best way would be to get feedback. But I didn’t feel like it. I just wanted to go with what I thought best.
But I ultimately surveyed over 200 people, and I’m glad I did. It lead to a different, better title: How to Sell Without Selling Your Soul.
And I’ve had to open myself up to getting more direct feedback on my presentation. I recently shared some of my ideas with a group and I felt naked and vulnerable in dong so because I didn’t have it all together. I don’t like feeling that way, but I was so glad I took the risk. They gave me confidence about certain things in my presentation I was unsure about, and gave me great ways to make my talk even better.
Thank you to TEDxWilmington for this great opportunity to grow!
