On July 19, 2017 I received an email with the subject line, “Your Formal Invitation To Give A TEDxWilmingtonWomen talk on November 2.” I loved it already, they cut right to the chase in the subject line and I was thrilled! I called my husband first but could not get him so I called a friend next who had helped me prepare and she shared in my excitement. After about the first hour of pure joy, I got into action mode. I thought about all I had to do, deadlines, coaches, slides and ultimately the talk. A sense of accomplishment mixed with fear kept swirling about as I realized that now I have to actually do it.

I signed the agreement form and returned it by that evening. I went on Amazon and promptly ordered Chris Anderson’s Ted Talks book. The next day, after staying up quite late the night before, I contacted a total of five TEDx talk coaches across the country and over the course of a few days spoke to four out of five of them. I found that their styles, fees and arrangements were different from one another and ultimately, I chose someone local who I felt the best connection with. Yesterday, my coach Erin and I worked a total of over four hours on what she called the “deep dive.” I left with an outline in hand feeling like I was actually going to be able to pull this off!

I have a lot more to do but so far so good. Right now what I am most struck by is my support system and how I truly would not be doing this without them and for that I am deeply grateful.
