We are now exactly one month away from my very first TEDx talk and my nerves have gotten the best of me. I have watched countless TEDx videos on YouTube of amazing content and equally amazing presenters, only to further diminish my confidence. “What if I mess up or stumble over my words?” are the two questions I constantly ask myself on a daily basis. Since I speak to women all over the country about love marriage and hair loss, you would think I would be a pro at this, right? The caveat is that I am used to working off PowerPoint, Google Slides or plain old note cards when I spoke in front of people and the majority of the time I had an hour or more to present my material. I guess you can say those have been a sort of safety net for me.

After listening to the audiobook TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking by Chris Anderson numerous times, it finally clicked for me: Tanya, simply tell your story. I realized that it’s my story I needed to convey to the audience. I was not in it to be this great orator of the 21st century, on the contrary, my goal is to motivate and inspire people by my story. So what if it’s only in 10 minutes? Since, it’s the life that I lived, it should be easy to tell it in 140 characters, in 10 minutes or in a 10 page term paper.

Needless to say, my confidence has increased. I have practiced over and again. I had my hubby and teens critique me and you know teens can be brutal. They feel that me being true to myself and telling my story the way I naturally talk, will move people to action. Now, I feel that I will be able to deliver an impactful and empowering message that will resonate far beyond my nerves.
