Wow! TEDxWilmington was such an amazing experience. In the process of preparing for this talk I discovered three unintentional benefits of giving a TED talk. They are as follows: clarity, confidence, and courage.
Clarity came as a result of drilling down to one single idea worth spreading. This really made me dig deep and as a result it helped me get really clear on what I valued, why I am here, and what I have been called to do. It also revealed to me just how intricately linked our purpose is to what we do in the world. Even my talk ultimately turned out to show this journey from birth to present day. My confidence has increased as well because I truly believe that confidence is gained from completion. Now that I came, I spoke, and I conquered the TEDxWilmington stage I feel like I have reached a new level, and it is quite refreshing. Lastly, I feel like I’ve gained courage to be unapologetic about speaking my truth and ideas to others. Overall, my experience revealed that there are so many fascinating people in the world with great ideas.
I truly enjoyed meeting all of the other speakers, and the speaker angel was such a divine encourager on the day of the event. I was really grateful for her and her big hugs! I was nervous, anxious, and excited to stand on the stage. But, I thrilled that I did it!
Prior to gracing the stage many of my students, family, and friends texted with excitement and encouragement. Afterwards, many shared that they were moved to tears by my talk, and this is what made it such a worthwhile experience. My favorite part was the teacher in the audience who was able to make a paradigm shift about her approach to black girls in the classroom moving forward. This solidified for me that it was time for me to spread this idea, and I am thankful that TEDxWilmington gave me this amazing opportunity.
