Jim Koenig co-chairs the privacy & cybersecurity practice at Fenwick & West, a prominent technology and life sciences law firm. Leading a unique group of lawyers and former industry chief privacy and security officers, he advises a variety of clients from emerging startups to Fortune 100 companies on a range of issues connected to innovative data uses, global privacy compliance and major breaches and cyber-attacks. Jim, who has acted as expert to regulators in high-profile cases, also assists businesses with regulatory investigations and enforcement actions or class-action litigation relating to privacy and cybersecurity practices. His specialties include artificial intelligence, machine learning, internet of things, autonomous vehicles and connected cars, genetics, biotech and medical devices, blockchain security and smart cities.
Jim has worked globally with an array of domestic and international clients on projects involving more than 125 countries. Over the last 10 years, he has represented clients in technology, life sciences, financial services, and many other industries—including 35% of Fortune 100 companies.
Drawing on his experience and reputation with regulators, Jim has served as the lead subject matter expert designing security, privacy and business solutions in a number of the recent high-profile U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights enforcement proceedings involving social media, mobile, and healthcare companies, and as an expert to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Jim co-founded the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), was recognized on the National Law Journal’s inaugural list of Cybersecurity Trailblazers and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional. He earned a B.S. in finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law.
