Dr. Ross Kasun is currently serving in his seventh year as the Superintendent for the Freehold Township School District and was chosen as the 2017 New Jersey Superintendent of the Year by NJASA. Blended and personalized learning with students being leaders of their own learning are cornerstones of his vision. For his efforts to foster personalized learning, Dr. Kasun was chosen to participate in the first cohort for the Lexington Education Leadership Award. This six month Fellowship helped create a vision and plan that has transformed learning throughout the district.
This critical work helped Freehold Township School District to be recognized as one of the most innovative in the country and invited to participate in the League of Innovative Schools. His article about leading a district’s journey toward personalized learning was published in District Administration in January 2017. Dr. Kasun was selected by the White House to attend the Future Ready Summit in Washington, D.C. in Nov. 2014, for his efforts to infuse technology into daily practice.
The servant leadership approach is one that Dr. Kasun tries to exemplify while striving to support every individual to reach and perform at his/her best. From his vantage point of 15 plus years experience as a school administrator, he is most proud of fostering “leadership for learning” by developing, coaching and mentoring the district’s team of principals, assistant principals and supervisors. His leadership encouraged the team to be innovators, take risks, and develop personalized pilots in their schools that impact student learning. As evidenced, Dr. Kasun’s work has targeted the district’s approach to education to be a data driven, technology infused, personalized approach to bring about accelerated growth for all students.
Creating learning experiences focused on the growth of every student is Dr. Kasun’s passion. As an educational leader, he has a proven record for creating a collaborative vision, utilizing transparent processes to build and maintain trust among the district’s stakeholders, and he built the capacity within all of his teams from his district leaders, to staff, to students. Dr. Kasun is an instructional leader and a systems thinker. He understands that a flexible framework and the implementation of a team of teams with a constant focus on the vision are imperative to achieve excellence.
Dr. Kasun is a Teaching Fellow and serves on an advisory panel that is developed an Executive Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at Monmouth University. He is an adjunct professor at Georgian Court University and St. Peter’s University. He earned his Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision, MA in Elementary Education and BS in Business Administration from Seton Hall University, and he obtained a MA from Rutgers University in Administration and Supervision.
Previously, he served as the Chief Education Officer of the Colts Neck School District and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction of the Summit Public Schools. He began his administrative career as Principal of the Seth Boyden Demonstration School in South Orange-Maplewood School District and then as Principal of the Glenwood Elementary School in the Millburn School District.
