My dog Maharani knows every word of my TEDx talk by heart, even if I don’t.  I rehearse when I am walking her.  She seems a bit bored and has suggested that she be given extra treats for having to listen to this over and over.

But I had a rehearsal with my speaker coach today and he said all the rehearsals had made a difference.  My coach said I was on track.  That was certainly more feedback than I had gotten from Maharani.

There are less than 4 weeks to go, and my second video is due this coming Monday.  I am hoping that I will get even more feedback then.

I am in that stage where almost every waking moment is occupied with thinking about this talk.  I think about it and practice first thing when I wake up, when in the shower, every time I walk the dog, while driving the car, most of the time I am not in direct conversation with someone else, and when I am lying in bed trying to go to sleep.  At this last time, my thinking is coupled with worry.  Do I have the right focus?  Are my examples clear? Do I have a good call to action?  Is there anything I can take out so that there is nothing said that is not needed?  On this last point, I am reminded of the saying on the T-shirt of the TEDxWilmington volunteers:  “Talk less. Say more. “

I believe I have a message that can help a lot of people improve their relationships with others so I am happy to spend the time preparing, rehearsing, and worrying to make sure it is digestible and enjoyable.  And I am grateful for TEDxWilmington as a platform to share these ideas.
