Twenty-two days ago, my life changed. I received an email officially inviting me to TEDxWilmington. When I accepted the invitation, I was not aware of how much preparing for a TEDx talk would change me both personally and professionally.
This process has been deeply transformative and humbling. It is quite hard to believe that the girl that earned a “C” in her college Public Speaking class, will soon present to a national audience.
It takes a lot of courage to share your life story with the world. I am constantly thinking to myself, what makes my story so special? Others have overcome far more crippling circumstances and are more successful than you will ever be. How many times will an audience want to hear about “overcoming the odds?” These questions have caused me to dig beyond the surface as I continue to work on my talk. I have spoken on this particular topic many times in the past. However, preparing for this type of talk, requires that that I take my professional knowledge and personal experiences and frame it so that the audience leaves with this huge “aha” moment. The prospect is both intriguing and frightening. However, it has been a long term aspiration of mine to take the lessons that I have learned and touch the hearts and minds of an audience. I have done it before through my books. However, this amazing opportunity with TEDxWilmington will allow me to broaden my reach on a grander scale. I look forward to standing on stage in two short weeks.
